Working with 5754-O
Is 5754 easy to machine?
Machines like soft 5xxx: use sharp polished-flute carbide, high rake, high speed and flood coolant or mist to stop built-up edge; harder H24–H38 tempers chip much cleaner than O.
Can 5754 be welded?
Excellent for MIG/TIG, FSW, resistance and laser welding with 5356 or 5183 filler (never 4043-type Al-Si with high-Mg base); as-welded joint strength approaches O-temper base metal.
Can 5754 be formed, bent or molded?
Very good cold formability in O/H111 (deep drawing, hemming, stretch forming); keep bend radii larger and expect springback in H24 and above, and watch for Lüders/stretcher-strain marks on visible O-temper panels.
What surface finishes work on 5754?
Takes clear and hard anodizing well and is a good base for chemical conversion, e-coat and paint; brushed/etched finishes are excellent, bright decorative anodizing can appear slightly grey.
