Working with DP980-CR
Is DP980 easy to machine?
Rarely machined; trim/pierce with high-hardness (PM or carbide) tooling, ≥12 % clearance and shear angles to limit edge cracking, since cut edges lose local ductility.
Can DP980 be welded?
Resistance spot weldable but use lower current with longer/pulsed schedules plus post-weld tempering pulse to reduce HAZ softening and interfacial (button-pullout) failure; for arc/laser welds keep heat input low and avoid hydrogen-bearing consumables.
Can DP980 be formed, bent or molded?
Cold formable but low total elongation and hole-expansion: allow 3–5× more springback compensation than mild steel, use generous bend radii (≈3–4 t), minimize burr and stretched edges, and expect high press tonnage (~2–3× mild steel).
What surface finishes work on DP980?
No inherent corrosion resistance — supply as GI/GA/EG coil or phosphate + cathodic e-coat/paint; avoid acid pickling or electroplating without immediate bake-out because of delayed hydrogen-assisted cracking risk.

DP980-CR — frequently asked
What is DP980-CR used for?
DP980-CR is typically used for bumper beams, B-pillar reinforcements, rocker and sill beams, front and rear rails, door intrusion beams and seat frame structures. In short: premium dual-phase sheet.
What is the yield strength of DP980-CR?
DP980-CR has a typical yield strength of 680 MPa (98.6 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,030 MPa (149 ksi) — stronger than 80% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 6 listed tempers.
Is DP980-CR easy to machine?
Not especially — machinability is rated poor (25/100, worse than 93% of steel grades). Rarely machined; trim/pierce with high-hardness (PM or carbide) tooling, ≥12 % clearance and shear angles to limit edge cracking, since cut edges lose local ductility.
Can DP980-CR be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated good (60/100). Resistance spot weldable but use lower current with longer/pulsed schedules plus post-weld tempering pulse to reduce HAZ softening and interfacial (button-pullout) failure; for arc/laser welds keep heat input low and avoid hydrogen-bearing consumables.
What surface finishes work on DP980-CR?
No inherent corrosion resistance — supply as GI/GA/EG coil or phosphate + cathodic e-coat/paint; avoid acid pickling or electroplating without immediate bake-out because of delayed hydrogen-assisted cracking risk.
Can DP980-CR be formed, bent or molded?
Cold formable but low total elongation and hole-expansion: allow 3–5× more springback compensation than mild steel, use generous bend radii (≈3–4 t), minimize burr and stretched edges, and expect high press tonnage (~2–3× mild steel).
What is the maximum service temperature of DP980-CR?
DP980-CR is rated for continuous use to about 200°C (392 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between DP980-CR and DP980-HY?
CR is the default condition — default stocked condition: bare cold-rolled coil/blank for structural stampings that are later e-coated or painted. HY: pick for crash/anti-intrusion members where high yield and dent/collapse resistance dominate and forming is mild (roll forming, simple stampings). Yield strength is 680 MPa in CR versus 780 MPa in HY.
Can FabDigit make parts in DP980-CR?
Yes — DP980-CR is available for sheet metal with instant online pricing. Upload a STEP file to get a price and a DFM check.
