What is A8 Q&T?

A8 Q&T is A8 heat treated to Q&T — general working condition: good balance of toughness and wear for blanking and forming tools. A8 Q&T has a yield strength of 1,700 MPa (247 ksi) and a tensile strength of 2,000 MPa (290 ksi) — stronger than 99% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 2% and the elastic modulus is 207 GPa (30 Msi). A8 Q&T has a density of 7.83 g/cm³ (0.283 lb/in³), lighter than 80% of steel grades. It melts at 1,420°C (2,588 °F). Annealed is the default condition FabDigit quotes; Q&T is available on request or by drawing note.

Working with A8 Q&T

Is A8 easy to machine?

Machine only in the annealed state (~220 HB) with rigid setups and coated carbide; after hardening use grinding or EDM plus a stress-relief temper.

Can A8 be welded?

Weld only for repair — preheat 300–370 °C, use matched 5 % Cr tool-steel filler, keep interpass temperature and temper immediately below the last tempering temperature.

Can A8 be formed, bent or molded?

Hot work at 1050–900 °C followed by slow cooling; no meaningful cold forming — air harden from 980–1010 °C with minimal size change and double temper at 200–540 °C.

What surface finishes work on A8?

Takes a good ground/lapped finish; protect with oil, black oxide, nitriding or PVD TiN/CrN coatings since the 5 % Cr gives no stainless behaviour.
