5140-CD is 5140 supplied in the CD condition — choose for close-tolerance, bright-finish bar used as-supplied for lightly loaded shafts and pins. 5140-CD has a yield strength of 660 MPa (95.7 ksi) and a tensile strength of 760 MPa (110 ksi) — stronger than 80% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 13% and the elastic modulus is 205 GPa (29.7 Msi). 5140-CD has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,416°C (2,581 °F). Machines well at 180–230 HB (≈65 % of 1212); above 35 HRC use coated carbide, rigid setups and reduced feeds, and prefer rough-machining before final temper.
