42CrMo-CD is 42CrMo supplied in the CD condition — close tolerance, bright surface bar for shafting and turned parts that need little further machining. 42CrMo-CD has a yield strength of 780 MPa (113 ksi) and a tensile strength of 930 MPa (135 ksi) — stronger than 86% of steel grades. Elongation at break is 11% and the elastic modulus is 210 GPa (30.5 Msi). 42CrMo-CD has a density of 7.85 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³), heavier than 56% of steel grades. It melts at 1,416°C (2,581 °F). HR is the default condition FabDigit quotes; CD is available on request or by drawing note.

Machine in the annealed or ≤32 HRC Q&T condition with rigid setups, carbide inserts and generous coolant; above 38 HRC switch to grinding or CBN.

Can 42CrMo be welded?

Weldable with low-hydrogen consumables but requires 200–350 °C preheat, controlled interpass temperature and immediate post-weld temper (~600 °C) to avoid HAZ cracking.
