Working with 22MnB5-CR
Is 22MnB5 easy to machine?
Blank, pierce and trim in the soft as-delivered state; after press hardening use laser cutting or CBN/ceramic tooling — conventional drilling and shearing of 1500 MPa martensite is impractical.
Can 22MnB5 be welded?
Resistance spot welding is standard (Al-Si coated requires adapted current/force schedules; Zn coating risks liquid-metal embrittlement); laser welding of Al-Si blanks needs coating ablation at the joint, and any welding softens the martensite in the HAZ.
Can 22MnB5 be formed, bent or molded?
Direct hot stamping: austenitize 900–950 °C for 3–6 min, transfer in <10 s, form and hold in the water-cooled die at >27 °C/s cooling to full martensite; cold forming is limited to the soft delivered state and bend radii after hardening should be ≥3–4 t.
What surface finishes work on 22MnB5?
Al-Si coated parts go straight to phosphate-free pretreatment and e-coat; uncoated hot-stamped parts must be shot blasted to remove scale, and electroplating/acid pickling should be avoided due to hydrogen embrittlement risk.

22MnB5-CR — frequently asked
What is 22MnB5-CR used for?
22MnB5-CR is typically used for A- and B-pillar reinforcements, door-impact beams, roof rails and side-sill reinforcements, bumper beams, tunnel and floor cross-members and front and rear longitudinal rails. In short: workhorse hot-stamping boron.
What is the yield strength of 22MnB5-CR?
22MnB5-CR has a typical yield strength of 380 MPa (55.1 ksi) and a tensile strength of 560 MPa (81.2 ksi) — weaker than 67% of steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 7 listed tempers.
Is 22MnB5-CR easy to machine?
Reasonably — machinability is rated good (55/100, better than 62% of steel grades). Blank, pierce and trim in the soft as-delivered state; after press hardening use laser cutting or CBN/ceramic tooling — conventional drilling and shearing of 1500 MPa martensite is impractical.
Can 22MnB5-CR be welded?
Yes — weldability is rated good (65/100). Resistance spot welding is standard (Al-Si coated requires adapted current/force schedules; Zn coating risks liquid-metal embrittlement); laser welding of Al-Si blanks needs coating ablation at the joint, and any welding softens the martensite in the HAZ.
What surface finishes work on 22MnB5-CR?

What is the maximum service temperature of 22MnB5-CR?
22MnB5-CR is rated for continuous use to about 250°C (482 °F). Strength falls off well before that limit — check the elevated-temperature data for load-bearing parts.
What is the difference between 22MnB5-CR and 22MnB5-PHS?
CR is the default condition — standard soft blank stock for direct hot stamping and for cold blanking/piercing before the press-hardening line. PHS: the in-service condition of hot-stamped B-pillars, bumper beams and roof rails — maximum strength, minimum springback, very low ductility. Yield strength is 380 MPa in CR versus 1,100 MPa in PHS.
