Working with A286 Age Hardened
Is A286 easy to machine?
Work-hardens strongly and is gummy: use rigid setups, positive-rake carbide, heavy constant feed, low speed (~20–30 m/min aged) and flood coolant; rough in solution-treated state and finish after aging.
Can A286 be welded?
GTAW/EBW with matching A286 or Ni-base filler; keep heat input low, avoid restraint and re-solution + re-age after welding to restore properties and avoid strain-age/HAZ cracking.
Can A286 be formed, bent or molded?
Form, draw and coil in the annealed/solution-treated condition — expect ~2× the forming loads of 304 and spring-back; hot work at 1000–1150 °C, then solution treat and age.
