Working with 1.4310 +C1500

Is 1.4310 easy to machine?

Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed and flood coolant; cold-worked tempers cut better but load tools more, blanking/stamping is the preferred route.

Can 1.4310 be welded?

Resistance, laser and TIG weld readily (308L/307 filler); the 0.05–0.15 % C invites carbide precipitation, and welding destroys the cold-work strength in the HAZ, so spring parts should be joined away from the working section.

Can 1.4310 be formed, bent or molded?

Anneal-temper stock stamps and deep-draws superbly (heavy springback, strong work-hardening, may need interstage anneals); high +C tempers bend only across the rolling direction with generous radii (≥1–3 t).

What surface finishes work on 1.4310?

Passivate per ASTM A967 or electropolish after forming; 2R/BA and No.4 finishes polish well; do not anodize — plating (Ni, Sn) needs a Woods-nickel strike.

1.4310 +C1500 — frequently asked

What is 1.4310 +C1500 used for?

1.4310 +C1500 is typically used for springs, clips, cutlery and structural strip for cold-formed parts. In short: work-hardening spring stainless; tempers to 1900 MPa; strength by cold rolling.

What is the yield strength of 1.4310 +C1500?

1.4310 +C1500 has a typical yield strength of 1,350 MPa (196 ksi) and a tensile strength of 1,600 MPa (232 ksi) — stronger than 99% of stainless steel grades. Strength varies by condition: see the 10 listed tempers.

Is 1.4310 +C1500 easy to machine?

Not especially — machinability is rated poor (28/100, worse than 80% of stainless steel grades). Gummy and strongly work-hardening — use rigid setups, sharp positive-rake carbide, heavy positive feed and flood coolant; cold-worked tempers cut better but load tools more, blanking/stamping is the preferred route.

Can 1.4310 +C1500 be welded?

Yes — weldability is rated good (55/100). Resistance, laser and TIG weld readily (308L/307 filler); the 0.05–0.15 % C invites carbide precipitation, and welding destroys the cold-work strength in the HAZ, so spring parts should be joined away from the working section.
